On our Way -- Lima, Peru (March 25th)
Our first day was consumed by travel. We left after lunch at home, driving to Miami to catch our 6pm flight. Skirting a traffic jam near the airport (thanks Google), we managed to arrive at our gate an hour before our flight (the jam caused some tense moments along the way). The AA flight itself was comfortable and uneventful; we arrived at 10 pm local time,, easily hooked up with the OAT representative at the airport, met some fellow travelers and took a bus ride through Lima to get to out hotel.

Most of the neighborhoods we drove through were poor and looked sketchy: people standing around on darks streets, small grubby and crowded, open air bars; lots of 1 and 2 story concrete buildings that looked more like bunkers than homes.
Eventually we entered the “tourist bubble” which contained our hotel: a lovely area by the sea containing gracious buildings, and clean, well-lit western-looking stores and streets. Our hotel was a two-story rabbit warren of reasonably sized rooms with clean and spacious bathrooms; however, our room did have a strong musty smell. Lima is persistently humid and air conditioning not the norm; so, while our room had an A/C unit, it was not on when we arrived. Indeed, the room was open to the outside and likely frequently left that way, letting the humidity penetrate every nook and cranny of its furnishings.
